Anna Camara is a Melbourne-based percussionist with a deep-rooted passion for African drumming.

Her dedication to percussion has led to a rich and diverse performing career across classical, contemporary, and West African traditions. Anna holds a Bachelor of Music Performance with Honours from the Victorian College of the Arts, where she specialised in Repertoire Percussion. Her Honours research explored traditional Guinean and Western percussion pedagogies, informing her distinctive musical voice. She has travelled to Guinea, West Africa on nine occasions for intensive study in djembe, dunun, balafon, song and dance—supported by the Australia Council for the Arts and Friends of the VCA. In 2010, she toured nationally with Guinean ensemble Muhanamwe, sponsored by Playing Australia.

Anna is a founding member of Jarabi Band, a dynamic West African fusion group led by master musician Mohamed Camara. Blending the musical traditions of Guinea with contemporary Melbourne sounds, Jarabi’s debut album Duniama – In This World (Music in Exile, 2023) received critical acclaim, with lead single Djamana placing in the top 10 of the 2024 Needle in the Hay competition. Their 2024 national album tour featured performances at Melbourne Recital Centre, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Mona Foma, Dark Mofo, Illawarra Folk Festival and more, and the group received a nomination for the prestigious Music Victoria Diaspora Award.

Anna has performed with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Australian Pops Orchestra, Lyric Opera, Melbourne Contemporary Opera Company, and the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic. She has appeared as a soloist with the VCA Symphony Orchestra, performed at the APRA Screen Music Awards and the Asia Pacific Breakthrough Summit, and recorded for the soundtrack of Bran Nue Dae. Her musical theatre credits include percussion chair for the 2023 season of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Regent Theatre and the 2024 VCA Music Theatre season of Curtains.

She is a recipient of multiple awards, including the Banyule La Trobe Young Artist of the Year, Athenaeum Award for Instrumental Soloist, MSO Snare Drum Award, and a VCA Honours Scholarship.

Anna currently teaches percussion at Carey Baptist Grammar School and Scotch College, and previously taught for 18 years at Eltham High School, where she played a key role in the development of its successful percussion program.
